Voter ID grant awards and activity - phase 1

In phase 1, nine grants were awarded for civil society equity led community groups to reach out to under-registered and under-represented communities to:

Raise awareness and increase understanding among Londoners from under-registered and under-represented communities about the changes to their civil and democratic rights

Ensure all eligible Londoners have a suitable form of photo identification to vote in the May 2024 elections, in person, and for those who cannot afford or cannot apply for a photo Voter ID, to make sure they apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate

Organisations funded in phase 1, January 2023

British Deaf Association

The British Deaf Association (BDA) will provide face-to-face information sessions delivered in British Sign Language (BSL) at various locations across London covering Barking & Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Greenwich, Hackney, Havering and Newham.

The BDA will also deliver a live streamed event to Deaf people across London. A BSL video will be shared through social media and emailed to Deaf community leaders to cascade to their networks.

Bulgarian Centre for Social Integration and Culture

The Bulgarian Centre for Social Integration and Culture will develop activities and materials for Bulgarian Londoners, including Bulgarian Roma. The focus is Enfield, where most of the Bulgarian community in London is centred.

Activity includes drop-in sessions and distribution of leaflets/ posters, webinars in Bulgarian which will be live streamed on social media and on Bulgarian Facebook forums. Awareness raising more widely across London will be undertaken working with the Eastern European Forum.

Coalition of Latin Americans in the UK (CLAUK)

The CLAUK coalition, made up of six Latin American-led partners, including lead partner Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation (IRMO), will work in different locations across London. They will create and translate digital and print resources into Spanish and Portuguese. These will be disseminated from six community centres and through each partners' social media. Activity is due to take place in Camden, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth and Southwark, as well as wider dissemination across London through social media.

Disability Action Haringey

Disability Action Haringey, working with Disability Action Islington, will develop bespoke information in appropriate and accessible formats and support participants to ensure that they are able to exercise their democratic rights. Themed large-scale events and smaller meetings within identified neighbourhoods and bespoke forums will be used to raise awareness and share information. Face to face activity will take place in Haringey, Islington and Hackney, as well as wider social media awareness across London by working with Inclusion London.

Health Equality and Rights Organisation t/a LGBT HERO

LGBT HERO will deliver a social media awareness raising campaign for LGBTQ+ Londoners, with a focus on trans and non-binary Londoners.

LGBT HERO will co-create resources and train volunteers to help share the message with their peers. Information in various formats will be hosted on a new hub on www.lgbthero.org.uk, as well as through a social media campaign. The campaign will also run online group drop-in sessions for trans and non-binary people and work with LGBT Consortium for enhanced pan-London reach.

Henna Asian Women's Group

Henna Asian Women's Group will provide information and organise events for the South Asian community, with a focus on in-person activity, held in English, Bengali, Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati and Pashto. Regular drop-ins and events include “kettle on” meetings and “Forms on Friday” weekly form filling advice sessions. Videos on how to complete forms for voter ID in community languages will be used to inform more widely and be promoted through social media activity.

The Romanian and Eastern European Hub

The Romanian and Eastern European Hub will deliver outreach sessions in the form of standalone events, attending relevant community events, weekly drop-in sessions at the Romanian Consulate and practical 1:1 support sessions to help with voter registration and applications for approved photo IDs.

A pan-London social media campaign will focus on specific significant days and opportunities such as the spring events that engage many Romanian Londoners, including Romanian Roma, in attendance across the capital.

The Traveller Movement

The Traveller Movement will develop a pan-London social media awareness campaign focused on the Gypsy, Traveller and Roma community in London. The campaign will feature videos of trusted individuals/ influencers, two online workshops/ information sessions, factsheets, and other awareness raising resources to be shared through the Traveller Movement’s organic community networks and social media platforms. In addition, the Traveller Movement will hold at least two face-to-face sessions at Traveller sites.

Voice4Change England

Voice4Change England will develop a pan-London social media awareness campaign. They will work with 19 member organisations in London with emphasis on members from the Black and minoritised ethnic community groups. Activity will include social media content, a video, online workshops, awareness raising via a newsletter reaching Black and minoritised community projects, and face-to-face awareness workshops in the community.
